The well-deserved vacation is coming up - a time of relaxation, adventure and enjoyment. But what if your period falls exactly at that time? Don't worry: In this article we would like to give you valuable tips on how to make your vacation stress-free even during your period.
Disposable period products such as tampons or sanitary pads are compact, lightweight and fit in any handbag - and if you forget them, they are available almost everywhere.
Menstrual cups and period underwear are also compact and easy to carry. They usually have a larger capacity than tampons, offer long-lasting protection and therefore need to be changed less often.
Do you know the fear of having to take a long flight, a train ride or a car ride full of traffic jams when your period is coming? Having to stop at the next rest stop only to find that there is no soap; or realising while on a hike in the middle of nature that your tampon needs changing?
Tampons and menstrual cups have the disadvantage that germs can get into the vagina when inserted, so you should pay attention to the appropriate hygiene when changing them. There are not always public toilets or the possibility to wash your hands with soap at any time, so it is best to have disinfectant with you so that you can change your period products hygienically.
Menstrual cups should also be washed after emptying and boiled thoroughly after your period at the latest to kill germs and prevent infections.
If you want to avoid changing your period underwear when you're on the go, we recommend period underwear. Our Strong Styles in particular have the advantage that they can absorb up to 6 tampons' worth of fluid and can therefore be worn for an extra long time. This makes them ideal for long flights, train journeys or day trips in general.
If you need or want to change them in between, you can simply change without risking dangerous infections from insufficiently washed hands.
Disposable period products such as tampons and pads are available almost everywhere, are compact and easy to carry, but need to be changed frequently. Used tampons and pads should be disposed of in a designated waste bin or in a sealable bag. Most disposable period products are not recyclable and are made of materials that are not biodegradable - so please do not dispose of your used disposable period products in nature or in the toilet! If you are out in nature or there is no suitable disposal option nearby, you should take a bag with you to pack the used products and dispose of them later in a trash can.
Pack enough period products to ensure you have plenty of options for changing. If you use period underwear, we recommend packing one ooia per day and one night for your trip or the duration of your period. For example, if you are traveling for 2 days and 2 nights, that would be 4 ooias. Optionally, you could also consider additional hygiene products such as menstrual cups, which give you extra security as a backup. Also remember to plan a storage option for the period underwear you have used.
The ooia wet bag is a real hero when travelling. You can use it to transport and store your used period panties in a leak-proof manner until you have found a suitable way to wash them out. Under the outer fabric there is an impermeable layer that does not allow any liquid to pass through. The practical wet bag is available in two sizes: a smaller version for 2-3 ooias and a maxi version that can store even more panties.
Your vacation should be about rest and self-care. During your period, your body needs a lot of rest and you may feel tired and listless. This is completely normal, because your hormone levels are at their lowest during this time - which is why this phase of the cycle is often referred to as the "inner winter". If you would like to find out more about the individual cycle phases, you can read on here: Understanding the menstrual cycle and periods .
The inner winter is the time to listen to yourself, what you need now and what is good for you. It is best to take conscious rest breaks and try not to overload your vacation days with activities. Plan enough sleep and rest - you may want to postpone a challenging hike until later. Light exercise such as yoga and stretching, on the other hand, can help to relax the body. You can find out more about the optimal exercise in the individual phases of the cycle here: Sport and periods .
Enjoy a beach holiday despite your period? Of course! If you want to relax by the water on a hot day, then our ooia period beachwear is a great option for you. It looks just like your usual swimwear, but like our ooia period underwear, it can reliably absorb liquids and protect you from leaks - without the need for a tampon string or pad in your bikini bottoms. It is also perfect for activities like beach volleyball, without slipping.
Unfortunately, we cannot override the laws of physics, so we recommend that you do not wear ooia beachwear when swimming in water. The membrane can soak up water and cannot absorb other liquids such as blood. If you take this into account, our ooia beachwear will hold up to three tampons' worth of liquid without leaking.
