Better sleep despite your period

Period & Sleep: What your cycle has to do with your night's rest, and how to sleep better

During your period, do you feel like you sleep worse or simply don't wake up feeling truly rested in the morning? You're not alone. Many women notice how their sleep changes around these days, whether it's due to a greater need for sleep, difficulty falling asleep, or feeling more restless at night.

This isn't due to you, but to your body: your hormone balance, temperature, and energy levels fluctuate during your cycle, and this also affects your night's rest. In this article, you'll learn why this is, how you can help yourself, and how to get through the night safely and relaxed with the right support.

Is the period heavier or lighter at night?

At night, blood usually flows more slowly, but the feeling in the morning can be deceiving.
While you're lying down, gravity affects your body differently. Blood can pool and only flows more heavily again when you stand up, which can feel like a heavier bleed. While this is normal, it often feels uncomfortable, especially if you're unsure whether your pad or tampon is still sufficient.

Period underwear that fits securely, doesn't slip, and can absorb up to 10 tampons' worth of liquid can give you an extra reassuring boost of confidence, especially at night.

And that's exactly why we developed ooia Period Underwear: reliable, incredibly comfortable, and designed to give you maximum security in such moments.

★★★★★

"Since switching to ooia menstrual panties, I feel more than secure. The panties offer absolute protection (I sometimes suffer from a heavy flow) for strong protection, especially leak-proof at night."

★★★★★

"With conventional period products, I always struggled with blood stains on my sleepwear and bedding at night, but not anymore with ooia. During the day, it's also very comfortable and feels much more breathable than pads."

When do sleep disturbances occur during the cycle?

Your sleep changes throughout your cycle, depending on the phase you are in. The reason lies in hormonal fluctuations that affect body temperature, mood, and sleep quality.

- Follicular phase (after menstruation until ovulation):
Estrogen levels rise – many women feel energized, sleep deeper and more restfully.

- Ovulation:
Hormone levels are at their peak. Some women experience minor sleep problems during this phase, e.g., difficulty falling asleep, often due to inner restlessness.

- Luteal phase (after ovulation until menstruation):
Serotonin levels drop, body temperature rises slightly. PMS symptoms such as irritability, breast tenderness, or mood swings can disturb sleep.

- Menstruation:
The body is strained by blood loss and pain – the need for sleep increases. At the same time, abdominal cramps or the feeling of leaking can impair sleep quality.

Do you sleep more during menstruation?

Many women have an increased need for sleep during their period.
This is because your body uses extra energy during menstruation.

It…:

- sheds the uterine lining

- re-regulates hormones

- and works to restore balance.

All of this takes energy, and your body demands it back through more rest.

How do you sleep best when you have your period?

You sleep best in the fetal position, ideally on your left side.
The side position with slightly bent legs relieves the abdomen and can thus alleviate menstrual pain. Your body relaxes because there is less pressure on the abdominal muscles – this can have a relaxing effect and help you fall asleep.

Even better: If you sleep on your left side, you also support blood circulation. The main artery is relieved, the heart can work more easily, and your body regenerates more effectively overnight.

What else helps:

- Warmth on the lower abdomen – e.g., with a cherry stone pillow

- Dark, cool sleeping environment

- Comfortable, flexible sleepwear

- Period underwear that reliably protects without constricting you

Sleep your way through the days - you're allowed to.

During your period, your body sends clear signals about what it needs: perhaps more rest, warmth, and leniency. Paying attention to these needs can support your sleep and help you feel more balanced.
