Period and hiking

Relaxed Outdoor Adventures, Even During Your Period

Hiking means freedom, pure nature, and a wonderful way to clear your head. But what if your period falls exactly during this planned getaway? Don't worry, that doesn't have to stop you from your adventure. With a little preparation and the right products, you can enjoy your hiking day just as much – whether you're on a day trip or planning a multi-day tour. Here are a few practical tips and tricks that will hopefully help you feel safe and comfortable :)

Preparation: Your Plan for Relaxed Hiking Days

Good preparation is essential, especially when you have your period. A small hygiene kit is worth its weight in gold in some situations! This includes:

- Wet wipes

- Hand sanitizer

- Waterproof bag for storing menstrual products

And to safely store everything, the ooia Wetbag offers the perfect solution: it is ideal for storing used or damp products such as tampons or wet wipes when there is no trash can nearby. It is also ideal for worn period underwear, as you can store it in it simply, leak-proof, and discreetly until you have the opportunity to wash it. Thanks to its odor and waterproof properties, you can store your period products and everything that goes with them hygienically and neatly. At the end of your trip, it can be easily washed out – a practical companion for on the go!

It can also help to inform yourself in advance about rest stops or shelters along the route if you are planning a longer tour. Such places often offer a bit more privacy, sinks, and soap for a hygienic change of your period products and make it easier for you to take a short break. No suitable places in sight? In nature, you can almost always find a sheltered spot – just be sure to respect the environment and leave no trash behind. (Did you know that even simple toilet paper can take several months to fully decompose?)

Changing Period Products on the Go

Tampons, Pads & Co.

Changing tampons or pads is easily manageable even in the wilderness. It is especially important when inserting tampons to disinfect your hands and ideally store used products in a leak-proof bag if there is no trash can nearby.

If you prefer pads, make sure they fit well and don't slip or chafe. During longer hikes, chafing can quickly become uncomfortable, so a test run before the tour is a good idea.

Menstrual Cups

Menstrual cups can be worn for several hours and then simply emptied. Before re-inserting, however, they should be thoroughly washed out. You should also definitely wash or disinfect your hands before removing them so that no bacteria or dirt gets into your body. A menstrual cup is therefore perfectly suited for a multi-hour hike; if you are out longer, you should definitely plan a stop at a rest area or a place where you can wash your hands and rinse your cup.

Period Underwear

A real game-changer for hikers: period underwear not only looks like normal underwear but has an integrated membrane system with several layers that safely absorb fluid and wick it away from the body. You can wear it for up to eight hours at a time, then easily change it and store the used panty in a waterproof bag, e.g., the ooia Wetbag, until the next washing opportunity. Since you don't have to insert anything, you don't even need to wash your hands when changing on the go – ideal for long hikes!

If you want extra protection, period underwear is also great as an additional backup to tampons, pads, or menstrual cups.

After the tour, the underwear is simply rinsed with cold water, put in the washing machine with your normal laundry at 40 degrees, and air-dried, after which it is ready to use again. Together with the ooia Wetbag, it offers a sustainable and carefree solution for on the go.
