Misogyny

Misogyny, Menstruation & Courage - Why Period Underwear Is a Feminist Statement

Hey, let's briefly talk about a topic that affects many of us. Often, without us even realizing it: misogyny. Sounds clunky at first, right? But if we look at what's really behind it, it quickly becomes clear: this topic concerns all of us. And yes, even period underwear can play a role.

What is Misogyny?

Misogyny is understood as the idea that women* are worth less than men* and are inferior to them. The term comes from ancient Greek (misos = hatred, gyne = woman) and is often translated as "hatred of women" or "hostility towards women."

We often think of extreme individuals, overt violence, or aggressive sexists. But there's much more to it: according to newer definitions, misogyny also describes structural disadvantage of femininity, which is not necessarily driven by malicious intent but is deeply rooted in our society. This means that even people who don't see themselves as misogynistic can devalue women through certain behaviors or statements, often without realizing it.

Causes of Misogyny - Where Does Misogyny Come From?

Various studies show that the main causes of misogyny lie in patriarchal norms and values. These include:

- outdated gender roles ("women* are emotional, men* rational"),

- religiously or culturally motivated practices and regulations,

- as well as structural inequalities, e.g., in access to education, income, or medical care.

These structures lead to women* and girls* being disadvantaged in many areas of life. Not because they are less capable, but because they are given less credit (or permission). And that is a problem.

Misogyny in society

The thing about misogyny is: it likes to hide in everyday life. In advertising that reduces women* to their bodies. In comments like "You're just being bitchy because you're on your period." Or in the fact that male-dominated jobs are often better paid, even though professions read as female, such as nursing or education, are at least as important to society.

Unfortunately, there are endless examples like these. But what helps against them?

Why do we need feminism?

Because equality is not a given. Because it must be defended every day worldwide. And because women* are still discriminated against, disadvantaged, and oppressed.

A few reasons why feminism is still urgently needed today:

- Women* earn less on average, with the same qualifications.

- Domestic violence primarily affects women*.

- Sexist advertising and language continue to shape our perception.

- Reproductive rights are restricted in many countries.

- Political and economic power are unevenly distributed.

- Women* are particularly often affected by hate and harassment online.

- Menstruation is still a taboo subject.

When the period becomes political

Yes, you read that right: menstruation is political. It sounds absurd at first, but it's true. Because how the topic is handled says a lot about our society. It is still embarrassing for many to talk about their period. Menstrual products are still missing from public toilets. And there are still cultures where menstruating people are considered "unclean" or are excluded during their period.

And while razors for men are readily sold everywhere, in some offices and schools you still feel more comfortable whispering when you ask for a tampon. But why?

Period underwear as a feminist act

This is where ooia comes in. Our mission is to take menstruation out of the taboo zone - with style, comfort, and a good dose of self-determination. As a Female Empowerment Company, we are passionate about feminist issues and have been committed to social change since our founding. Fighting misogyny - even in everyday life

Recognizing and questioning misogyny is the first step. The second: talking about it. The third: consuming consciously, thinking critically, acting in solidarity.

Feminism does not mean being against men. But for equality. For visibility. For self-determination. And that starts with the question: Why should I be ashamed of my natural body?

The answer: You shouldn't. Never. Period.
