Jogging during your period

Day 1 of my period. My stomach is cramping, and my mood is in the basement. Going out for a run right now sounds almost crazy. But it's precisely these runs that are often the most valuable. Because they show me: My body can be as it is – and yet it carries me forward, step by step.

We often underestimate how much energy and clarity exercise can give us, especially during this time. A slow run can relieve cramps, clear the mind, and give back a sense of control. These are the small moments when we feel that our body is stronger than we think – and that we can decide how we shape our days.

Can I go jogging during my period?

Of course! Jogging during your period is not only possible but can even be really good for your body. Many women* report that exercise can alleviate symptoms and lift their mood during menstrual cramps.

So, if you feel like moving, there's nothing stopping you from going for a run during your period. The important thing is to listen to your own body – every period is individual.

Can I run a marathon during my period?

Yes, absolutely. Especially in sports, it shows that performance does not only depend on perfect conditions, but on how much you trust yourself. A marathon during your period is also possible – if you listen to yourself, know your limits, and trust in what's inside you.

An impressive example of this is the Chinese runner Li Meizhen. In the middle of the Hengshui Lake Marathon 2024, she unexpectedly got her period – and still kept running. Instead of being deterred, she completed the full 42 kilometers, impressively proving that menstruation is no reason to give up a goal. Her run makes visible what we often forget: Strength does not mean achieving everything easily, but staying persistent – even when the path gets uncomfortable.

What are the benefits of running during your period?

- Can relieve pain: Running during period pain can promote blood circulation and noticeably alleviate cramps.

- Lifts your mood: Even with period pain, exercise releases endorphins that can improve your mood and counteract PMS symptoms.

- Strengthens circulation: Training during your period kickstarts your metabolism and helps to combat fatigue.

- Creates lightness: Many do not see jogging and menstrual discomfort as a contradiction – movement during your period can reduce feelings of heaviness.

Jogging during your period does not mean you have to grit your teeth and perform the same as outside your period – rather, it means you give yourself space to view movement as support. Your body will show you what feels right.

Does jogging affect your period?

Yes – running can affect your period, but not in terms of limitations, but rather as a companion. Some women* notice that their bleeding changes slightly with regular exercise, for example becoming lighter or more regular. Others find that they feel more emotionally balanced when they remain active during menstruation.

Jogging during your period is therefore not just a question of sport, but also affects body awareness. Your cycle sets the rhythm – and you decide how you want to move during this time. Movement can help you feel more stable, free, and connected to your body.

Your period does not mean stagnation. It is part of your strength – and running can make that visible. And because each cycle phase brings its own unique energy, it's worth paying attention to when your body calls for power – and when it asks for rest.

In which cycle phase is running particularly suitable?

Each cycle phase brings its own strengths – the art is to know them and adapt your training accordingly. Exercise during menstruation or in the days after often feels different, and you can use exactly that to your advantage.

How your training changes during your cycle:

- Menstrual Phase (Days 1–5): Even though hormone levels are low, your resilience is high. If cramps allow, even intense training or competitions are possible. Jogging during your period can relieve pain and provide new energy.

- Follicular Phase (Days 6–14): Energy increases noticeably – this is the phase where tempo and strength training come particularly easy. Many women* feel highly motivated during this time.

- Ovulation (around Day 14): A performance peak is often noticeable here – you can feel strong and fast. At the same time, however, the risk of injury increases because ligaments and joints are less stable around ovulation.

- Luteal Phase (Days 15–28): With an increased body temperature and fluctuating energy, this time is ideal for moderate training, yoga, or regenerative runs. PMS symptoms like fatigue or mood swings can occur – gentle movement often has a soothing effect.

Your cycle is as individual as you are. Pay attention to your signals, track your symptoms, and find out when movement feels best for you.

Tips for jogging during your period

With a few small tricks, you can make jogging even more enjoyable. Your body is working at full speed during this time, and the right preparation can optimally support you.

What you can pay attention to:

- Comfortable period underwear from the Sport Collection by ooia: Breathable, elastic, and at the same time highly absorbent period underwear gives you security without having to worry about leaks. The seamless slips don't show under your sportswear, don't slip, absorb up to 6 tampons' worth of fluid, and feel completely dry.

- Start gently: Listen to your body and start at a relaxed pace. Often the run gets easier after a few minutes.

- Regular breaks: Especially with heavier bleeding, it's perfectly okay to choose shorter distances or consciously take walking breaks.

- Give your body energy back: A light meal with complex carbohydrates and iron can help you maintain strength and endurance.

- Hydration: Don't forget to drink – this prevents circulatory problems and supports your energy balance.

And because exercise and nutrition go hand in hand during your cycle, we've put together more tips for you here: Period and Nutrition.
