Did you sleep badly because of your period? You are not alone: Many menstruators not only complain about mood swings and pain, but also about problems falling asleep or restless sleep - and blame the cycle.
Is it all your imagination? No: sleep and cycles are really connected. We sleep worse, especially before and during our period, due to hormonal reasons.
In the so-called inner winter, so just before or during your period, your hormone level and your energy level are at their lowest. Many menstruating people feel increasingly tired and have an increased need for sleep. However, sleep itself is often not as restful as usual during this phase: hormonal changes, abdominal cramps and fear of leaking can affect the duration and quality of sleep.
Establish an evening routine
A daily evening routine can help you switch off and relax. This can be a cup of herbal tea, yoga, meditation or reading a good book.
Put your cell phone away before going to bed!
Screen time late in the evening can cause you to have difficulty falling asleep. The blue light from smartphones tricks your brain into thinking it's broad daylight and can disrupt your sleep patterns. It is therefore recommended that you stop looking at your cell phone 2 hours before going to bed.
Create a feel-good atmosphere
The bedroom should be quiet and rather cool. The ideal sleeping temperature is between 16 and 18 degrees. A dark or darkened room is best because the sleep hormone melatonin is released in the dark, which makes you tired.
Light dinner
It is best to eat dinner that is easy to digest. A greasy dinner or too much raw food can mean that the body has to use a lot of energy for digestion in the evening, which in turn can lead to restless sleep.
Less alcohol and caffeine
Alcohol or caffeine can also have a negative impact on your sleep. It is generally recommended to avoid coffee from midday onwards - or to use a caffeine-free alternative.
No more fear of leaks with period underwear
