Swimming with your period

First things first: Swimming during your period is not a physiological problem. Nevertheless, we know that the thought of swimming while on your period can be quite uncomfortable. We've all had the fear of something leaking and someone noticing. Depending on where you go swimming - in a public swimming pool, in the sea or a lake - this fear can be greater or lesser.

The fear of blood in the water

If something does leak and someone notices: period blood is neither unhygienic nor bad in any way, but something completely normal. Unfortunately, not everyone out there has grasped this yet, but please don't let it upset you too much. Especially since most public swimming pools and even most private pools use chlorine for disinfection.

Swimming with period products

On your heavy period days, period products can help prevent leaks. Here, too, we want to clear up a myth: Yes, if you use tampons while swimming, they can soak up water. This is completely normal and not harmful to you. However, it is important to remember to change your tampons more often while swimming.

Why? On the one hand, once tampons have absorbed liquid, they are less able to absorb further liquids. On the other hand, the water quality, for example in lakes, can sometimes fluctuate greatly. Here it is important that a tampon that has soaked up not-so-clean water does not remain inside you for too long.

The use of pads in the water is less recommended. These also soak up a lot of water and can hardly absorb any other liquids. However, the real problem here is usually the adhesive used to attach the pads to your swimsuit or bikini. It can easily happen that this loses its adhesive power in the water and you therefore lose your pad while swimming.

Menstrual cups do not soak up water while swimming. It is very unlikely that water from the outside - past the cup - will run into the cup. If you use them correctly, they are hygienic and have the advantage that you don't have to worry about tampon strings sticking out.

ooia Beachwear: Period underwear for the beach

If you want to relax on a hot day at the lake, beach, or even in the park, then our ooia period beachwear is a great option for you. It's made from durable bikini material that looks no different from your usual swimwear. This means you can relax normally at the lake, pool, or beach without it looking like you're wearing period underwear.

Can you swim with period underwear?

Since we, unfortunately, cannot override the laws of physics, we recommend that you do not wear our period panties or ooia beachwear when swimming in the water. The membrane can soak up water and will not be able to absorb other liquids such as blood. If you keep this in mind, our ooia beachwear is leak-proof and can hold up to three tampons worth of liquid.

Swimming During Your Period: The Right Preparation

If you know you want to go swimming during your period, it's best to bring a few extra period products just in case. If you're swimming in a place where there are no toilets or changing rooms, it's best to pack a bag or similar for disposing of disposable products. Most disposable period products are not recyclable and are made of materials that are not biodegradable in nature.
